Lichens are colorful, versatile survivors and extreme athletes of the plant world – even in your own neighborhood. Yet few people notice these mysterious symbiotic organisms, made up of fungus and algae, which enrich Berlin’s urban nature with around 250 species in both likely and unlikely places. During a two-hour walk across the Berlin-Buch research campus, curious participants will discover the uniqueness and diversity of these dual organisms. You’ll adopt a "lichen lens" – one that will help you recognize and appreciate these colorful, resilient life forms even in your own surroundings. Along the way, you’ll also gain insights into the history and present of the Berlin-Buch research campus. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to experience urban nature together.

To search for mushrooms, you go to the forest – but mushrooms are everywhere, even in the city. They thrive in cemeteries, sports fields, parks, and on the Campus Berlin-Buch. Together, we’ll search for fruiting bodies and learn about the key features used to identify mushrooms. This interactive tour also explores how mushrooms live – both the visible and the hidden aspects – and their everyday roles. You'll also discover how mushrooms can help us shape a more sustainable future. No prior knowledge is required.
