From cobalt cannons to sleep therapy: Buch as a medical centre in GDR film documentation

The medical centre in Berlin-Buch was a regular topic in the DEFA newsreels. The aim was to demonstrate the SED's successful health policy. To this end, doctors and research teams were portrayed and the use of medical technology was highlighted. Occasionally, challenges such as environmental pollution as a cancer risk or dealing with dying were also discussed.

In cooperation with the Berlin Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship (BAB), we will show excerpts from 13 GDR newsreels and documentaries from 1950 to 1986 about the Berlin-Buch medical centre, curated and presented by BAB consultant Elena Demke.

The event is in German; admission is free and, as usual, there will be an opportunity for discussion before and after the film, with wine and cheese!

We appreciate your interest.
